Celebrating our sponsorship with Stand By Me - a local Christian charity
Today, we celebrated Colombia Day, highlighting our meaningful charitable partnership with the local Christian charity Stand By Me. This inspiring initiative sees every year group sponsor a child in Guacamayal, Colombia, with the same child staying connected to their year group as they progress through the school.
The day began with a moving assembly led by Colin and Karen from Stand By Me, who shared stories about life in Guacamayal. They highlighted both the joyful moments, such as the recent Christmas celebrations, and the challenges faced by children in the community, reminding us of how fortunate we are.
A highlight of the assembly was learning a Colombian song sung in Spanish, complete with a lively accompanying dance that brought smiles to everyone’s faces.
In classrooms, pupils explored Colombia through engaging activities:
- Year Three: Map work to locate and learn about Colombia's geography.
- Year Four: Comparing and contrasting different locations within Colombia.
- Year Five: Crafting diamante poems, a form of poetry that originated in Colombia.
- Year Six: Producing informative leaflets about Colombia’s culture and way of life.
Adding to the festive atmosphere, pupils came dressed in the vibrant colours of the Colombian flag. Meanwhile, our amazing catering team treated us to a delicious Colombian-inspired lunch, which was thoroughly enjoyed by all.
As a school, we remain committed to finding new ways to support our friends in Colombia throughout the term. Colombia Day has once again been a powerful reminder of the importance of generosity, community, and global citizenship.
