Do we have a future fishmonger on our hands?
Year Five have been extremely lucky to be invited to Billingsgate Market by CJ Seafood training school. On arrival, the children were amazed by the models of all the different type of fish displayed - these models were worth over £30,000! The children had the opportunity to ask many questions and were excited at the prospect of the market being moved to Barking. Then, the aprons were on! All children had the opportunity to de-head and peel their prawns ready for cooking. They then had to prepare the squid (this point made me extremely squeamish!). The bravery to do this by all children was commendable. They then tasted their perfectly prepared fish in a lovely stir-fry. Their final task was to learn how to gut a fish! The children were so willing to touch and smell the raw fish. They had even learnt how to recognise when the fish is fully fresh. Our workshop ended with them eating delicious mackerel burgers! Wow. What an experience they had today. Well done to all children they tried new foods - it was lovely to see so many of them enjoying the prawns and squid. The other Year 5 classes have this experience to look forward to next week.
