Dear parents and carers,

Statutory Inspection of Anglican and Methodist Schools

As you will all be aware, we had a visitor in our school this week.  This is inspection looks at the question, “How effective is the school’s distinctive Christian vision, established and promoted by leadership at all levels, in enabling pupils and adults to flourish?”  Such inspections occur every five years.  Our previous one was in 2015 hence we were long overdue, so this was not a significant surprise.  Any inspection can be stressful on the school community but overall, this was a fantastic day.  Sadly I am not allowed to share the grade we received, even to the staff or local authority, but I will say that I am very happy!  There were many wonderful statements shared but the one that was most important to me was,

"The school lives out its Christian vision. It is fully embedded across the school and drives everything that happens, especially the curriculum.  As a result of the vision and curriculum, pupils’ aspirations have been raised.  They shared that their hopes and opportunities for the future have increased as a result of their lessons and experiences offered. Pupils’ beliefs of what they can achieve in the future have been raised."

That is exactly what I wanted to hear. A huge thank you to everybody involved, especially those parents and children who met with the inspector.

Two-day trip to France

Those of you who access our phone app and who are on our Facebook group will have seen many of the photos taken during this wonderful experience.  Even as I type this, I can hear a pupil telling our SIAMS inspector what a fabulous experience this was and how she will remember it for the rest her life.  From travelling by ferry, making our own bread, speaking French to strangers, learning about chocolate in French and playing on the beach at night - this really was a tremendous excursion.  Rather than write more I will let the pictures below tell the story.  My thanks to not only the brilliant adults whose enthusiasm and commitment made this trip possible but also to those who covered back at school (especially for me with an inspection looming) and the admin team for ensuring all the necessary arrangements were in place so that the trip ran smoothly.

 Matilda the Musical!

Our fantastic experiences are certainly not limited to travelling abroad.  I am delighted that last Wednesday all of Year Five visited London's famous West End to see the production of Matilda the Musical.  Not only did this wonderful production engage all children but also covered important issues around safeguarding - not tolerating abuse, along with taking a stand against injustice.  Furthermore, linked to our curriculum intent the pupils were exposed to a range of careers within the theatre industry from actors to costume designers; makeup artists to lighting engineers.  With film studios coming into operation near Dagenham East station, who knows maybe we will have future starts in our midst along with those who work so diligently to make such productions happen.  I now look forward to seeing the wonderful follow-up work that is produced in class.

I pray you all have a wonderful weekend and enjoy the bank holiday

2 Timothy 3:16

All Scripture is inspired by God and is useful for teaching and for showing people what is wrong in their lives. It is useful for correcting faults and teaching how to live right.

We are using a new resource in school called 'Widgit'.

Widgit symbols can be used to  support communication for routines, behaviour and new vocabulary to ensure that children have a voice and can access the world around them. Here is a link to their website for resources you can use at home:

Celebrate the Coronation of King Charles III.

The council is proud to host a  monumental occasion, which will bring the community together to celebrate in true British fashion. The day will kick off with the screening of the Coronation, setting the perfect celebratory atmosphere for the day ahead.

We have an exceptional line-up of entertainment planned for the event, including live music with tributes to the Spice Girls, Chas & Dave, and The Beatles, dance performances, Proms in the Park with High Voltage, and exciting activities for all the family, including free bouncy castles and free face painting

I recommend 'The Worst Witch' by Jill Murphy. I have watched the TV series of this and excited to read the books to compare events. I started to read this book on the coach to France and have read the book nearly every day since.  There are lots of books in this collection and look forward to reading them.

Year Three

This week in Year Three, we have learned about similes and metaphors.  The children have really enjoyed describing a green monster using these techniques.  In maths, we have finished this aspect of our fractions work and will be moving on to adding and subtracting fractions next week.  We would like to thank you for continuing to encourage the children to practise regularly on Times Tables Rock Stars, it really does help the children in all areas of the maths curriculum.  R.E. this week involved the children finding out how Jesus chose his first disciples, and we discussed the qualities they would need. In science, we will be moving on to our new topic about plants.  We are hoping the children will be able to develop their green fingers by growing a plant from seed.  We wish you an enjoyable long weekend!

Year 4

Year Four have continued to work hard this week.  In maths, the children have started to examine equivalent fractions.  This topic is often something that is tricky but, to their credit, all the children are persevering and trying their best.  In R.E. the children have moved on to their next unit of study called ‘The Fall’.  They examined this story in Genesis 3 and then discussed how we can be tempted in our lives.  We have also started a new unit of study in science.  This week, the children examined the different types of teeth we have and their functions. The children really enjoyed their first task which was to use a mirror to examine their own teeth and to then make a plasticine model of some of their teeth.  In history, the children have begun their new unit on the Romans by learning about the founding of Rome and the beginnings of the Roman Empire.  This is in preparation for our visit to Colchester Castle on Friday 19th May.

Year Five

It ha been another exciting and purposeful week of learning in Year 5! After our lessons developing vocabulary for characters and settings from the books using the five senses, we went to see the whole Matilda story performed on stage in London! Next week, we will begin our focus on William  Shakespeare and 'A Midsummer Night's Dream' in English lessons as well as reading sessions. Our new Maths topic, which we have just begun, is statistics, where we will be continuing to investigate tables and line graphs both for construction and interpretation. In Science we have been planning an investigation for our upcoming topic 'Materials' and thinking about the properties and uses of a variety of materials. Watch this future space to discover the links between our Science and Design work this term!

Year Six

This week in Year Six, children had an additional assessment week focusing on reading, SPAG and maths. Children have worked extremely hard over the year, it is great to see the progress made by all children. In addition to this, in reading sessions, children have been exploring characters and settings, recognising the different impressions they get from the characters and how the settings create mystery and atmosphere. In maths, children have continued to apply mental and written methods to solve arithmetic questions and solve problems. In PSHE, children began their new unit on Relationships. During the lesson, children identified significant people in their lives and understood how it feels to have these people close to them. Children created relationship webs and use natural resources to represent different people. Please continue to encourage your children to continue with their revision at home.
