23/24 - Autumn 2 - Week 6

Dear parents and carers,

Christmas Bazaar

Christmas has truly begun at William Ford with our Christmas Bazaar taking place last Wednesday.  This was a fantastic time of festive cheer as the whole community came together to play games, enjoy music and even meet Santa!  Please click here if you would like to view some photos William Ford Junior School - Christmas Bazaar (williamfordschool.co.uk).  A huge thank you to Mrs Beech and the William Ford team for arranging and facilitating such a wonderful event – I am sure this will now become a regular fixture at William Ford.

Our Christmas celebrations continued as the school came together this afternoon to enjoy a pantomime (oh yes they did)!  Next week begins our iSingPop preparations and concert, along with Christmas dinner day, disco and Christmas jumper day.  So many great events for the pupils to enjoy.  All parents should have received a separate letter outlining details of all of these events.

iRockSchool

After a couple of weeks of mystery, all was revealed in assembly today as Rory from iRockSchool (who apparently has performed at Glastonbury) formed a rock band on stage made up of children from across the school.  This is a new opportunity for children who enjoy their music and want to learn either the electric drums, electric guitar, keyboard or be a singer.  Children will learn in groups and form their own mini rock band.  Your child should have been given a letter today with further information.  The cost for this tuition is about £38 per month with lessons happening weekly.  We will look to support Pupil Premium families – please contact Mrs. Noakes for details.

Year Four India Day

Year Four truly embraced their geography unit on India by hosting an India Day.  More information can be seen below in 'Our news' plus click here to view some photos. William Ford Junior School - Year 4 India day (williamfordschool.co.uk)  The curry they cooked for me was really delicious!

Christmas events at Dagenham Parish Church

Please see below for information about upcoming events at Dagenham Parish Church.  There is also a video that you can view: https://www.youtube.com/shorts/9l1hmTeIRrI

I pray you all have a wonderful weekend.

For a child has been born to us, a son given to us, and the authority is upon his shoulder, and the wondrous adviser, the mighty God, the everlasting Father, called his name, "the prince of peace."

Bazaar Success!

A huge thank you to al the parents, carers and staff who made our first Christmas Bazaar a huge success. The cost-of-living crisis has had wide-ranging negative impacts on children and their families. One consequence of the crisis is that it has significantly impacted children’s learning and exacerbated existing barriers to education for disadvantaged children the most, crucially impacting their readiness to learn in school. All money raised will go into the schools hardship fund to support families in our school community when times are financially difficult.

iSing Pop tickets will go live this weekend on ParentPay. Please remember no buggies can be bought in the hall.

Entry tickets will be priced at £3.00. This is entry only and there will be seating available, but we are hoping some of our parents will prefer to stand and dance (maybe even sing) with the pupils.

There are lots of things coming up in the lead up to Christmas both in school and the borough.

This week 'The World's Worst Children' by David Walliams has been recommended.

This book is about five beastly boys and five gruesome girls who are thought to be the world's worst children. It is a really funny book with lots of fun stories and events.

Year Three

Christmas feels like it has really begun in school this week, what with the opportunity to visit the Christmas bazaar on Wednesday and the brilliant pantomime we all got to enjoy today. Despite the festivities, the children have continued to learn new skills and knowledge, in addition to assessing what has previously been studied. In maths, we have practised rounding numbers to the nearest 1, 10 and 100 and then applied this skill when estimating answers. The children have found this work challenging and we will be returning to it during our early morning work activities to ensure it is embedded. We have also practised using inverse operations. In English, the children have written a newspaper report based on 'James and the Giant Peach'. This will be used as their writing assessment for this half-term.

In history, the pupils learnt about mummification and the Egyptian Book of the Dead by looking at example of primary evidence.

We carried out our end of unit assessment task in R.E. this week. The children had to design a piece of artwork to represent  the Holy Trinity and explain why they chose that particular design. Their designs were thoughtful and eye-catching.

In art, the children carefully painted their Egyptian papyrus scrolls. It was very fiddly but they have produced pleasing results.

The Year Three team wish you all a happy and restful weekend.

Year Four

This week in Year 4, our focus in Maths was on multiplication with 2-digit and 3-digit numbers. The children have been honing their multiplication skills, learning to apply their knowledge to solve problems using larger numbers.

In English, we delved into the features of instructional writing. The students have been exploring the language and structure of instructions, applying this knowledge to write their own clear and precise instructions.

As part of our learning about different cultures, we embarked on a fascinating journey into traditional Indian cuisine. The children thoroughly enjoyed researching and discovering the rich and diverse culinary traditions of India.

We were delighted to indulge in a fantastic India Day, where the entire day was dedicated to celebrating Indian culture and cuisine. The highlight of the day was undoubtedly the cooking session, where the children enthusiastically participated in creating a wholesome vegetarian and chicken curry accompanied by freshly made naan bread and rice. It was a wonderful opportunity for the children to experience the vibrant flavours and aromas of Indian cooking. We also had the opportunity to do henna tattoos, make personal Diva lamps and create oil pastel drawings inspired by Indian art and culture.

We are really proud of the children’s engagement and enthusiasm in their learning this week. Next week is going to be full of Christmas activities, as we build up to our iSingPop Christmas concert! We hope you have a great weekend and we look forward to exploring more enriching experiences with Year 4 pupils, next week!

Year Five

This week in English, our focus has been on writing an argument from one viewpoint. The children looked at the features of an argument in order to plan and write their own argument. Their writing discussed whether Ahmet had the right to fight back Brendan the bully after he stole from him, based on the text we are looking at 'The boy at the back of the class'. The children wrote some fantastic pieces of work that included lots of persuasive and emotive language to convince the reader to support their view.

In maths, we began our new unit of work on multiplying and dividing. This week, the children looked at using the column method and area models to multiply 2-digit numbers by 2-digit numbers.

In history, we continued to look at the Anglo-Saxons. The children learnt about Runes and how the Anglo-Saxons used these symbols as an alphabet in their writing system. They even had a chance to translate and write their own messages using Runes.

We hope you have a fun-filled and restful weekend!

Year Six

This week has been a mixture of work but also the beginning of some Christmas fun for the Year Six children.  Many of them visited the school's Christmas bazaar on Wednesday to pick up a bargain and all of them enjoyed watching the pantomime today.

In maths, the children have continued their work on fractions.  Again, we would like to remind parents how important it is for children to confidently recall their multiplication facts in order to complete fractions accurately.  In English, we have now moved on to examining the key features of balanced arguments.

The children have begun sewing their waistcoats together in their DT lessons.  It has proved particularly tricky for many of them, but they have worked so hard and shown true determination in their efforts.  In science, the children have examined how white light is made up of seven colours and in R.E. we have begun to examine humanism.

Once again, the Year Six team wish you a restful weekend.
