Dear parents and carers,
A lot has taken place this week at William Ford! Below is a brief summary but do scroll further for our new articles that contain pictures and further information.
World Book Day
From Willy Wonka to Harry Potter, I have to say I am incredibly impressed with the efforts undertaken by pupils and staff to celebrate this annual event. due to the amount of school visits that are taking place this week, we decided to celebrate on Wednesday (it just did not seem fair to make Year Six attend Snaresbrook Crown Court, along with tube travel, in fancy dress!) but nevertheless, the pupils had a fun-filled educational day promoting the benefits of reading and the enjoyment of books.
Snaresbrook Crown Court
As part of our teaching around British Values (rule of law) and our curriculum intent to promote careers for the future, Year Six were offered an incredible opportunity to undertake a court case in Snaresbrook Crown Court. Through learning a script, they were able to experience a variety of roles within the legal profession, from barrister to judge. Through this experience they have developed their understanding of the UK legal system along with the acting skills as they re-enacted a court case.
Lego workshop
Working with Lego is becoming a prominent feature of our newsletter and news articles. This is because I have seen for myself the engagement and level of concentration Lego can bring and firmly believe using Lego in the classroom can bring about improved skills and knowledge. I am even looking into providing teacher training around the use of Lego in the classroom. As part of this, this week some of Year five had the opportunity to attend the London Design and Engineering College in Beckton to undertake a Lego space project - developing their understanding of space junk and the damage this can cause to satellites, spacecraft and the International Space Station. They also looked at the careers available in the space industry.
Parents Evening/Parent Survey actions
We are delighted with the number of parents who are now attending parents evenings and engaging with their children's education. Research shows time again that when parents and the school work together in partnership, children benefit. Following on from the parent survey before Christmas, we also trialled with Year Six providing a print out of how these pupils scored within their recent testing. The feedback I have had from staff has been exceedingly positive. I would also be interested in hearing from Year Six parents, as we look to roll this out across the school. We are also actively working on half-termly curriculum newsletters which will provide an overview of your child's learning for that half-term along with suggestions (not homework) that you can use if you would like to support their education at home. These should be available just before the Easter break (or just after at the latest).
I pray you all have a wonderful weekend.
