Dear parents and carers,

There are many things that are truly special about William Ford School. From our unique approach to delivering the curriculum to the range of enrichment we offer; from the community feel across the school to the fact we are a centre of excellence for inclusion.  But one element I particularly find wonderful about our school is how we are not just within the local community but a part of the local community.

The work that has taken place across the past month as part of our community month has shown just how much our pupils care about the area in which they live and all of its residents, regardless of age.  Having our children serve at the local care home (from playing games to providing art work) is heart-warming but much more recently, hearing how Year Six cleared the local churchyard of litter before a funeral took place, as an act of support for the grieving family truly demonstrates our school and its pupils and staff commitment to Dagenham.

We also love to work alongside local groups.  Recently we invited in Borthwick Performing Arts to run workshops for some of our year groups.  I am now delighted to welcome Gymnastics FM to the school who will be renting out our facilities for their club.  If your child is interested in joining, please do contact them directly using the details on this flyer:

As the summer holidays approach, please start to look for activities to keep your children entertained. If you need any support during the summer break or are looking to connect with other families, please have a look at the LBBD Parent Forum website: www.justsayforum.online 

With this beautiful warm weather looking to be here for a while, please ensure that your child has a hat for use in the playground and a refillable water bottle to ensure they remain hydrated throughout the day. You may wish to apply suncream to your child prior to school. 

Please remember to provide your child with a PE kit as we no longer have any spare items.

Summer Programmes @ William Ford

We are happy to have both Kick and Inspire Minds Through Sport returning to run another round of their amazing holiday clubs at William Ford School during the summer holiday period.

Kick Summer Camp @ William Ford School

Kick's football camp is the ultimate mix of fun and skill-building for young football fans. Led by an experienced coach, the camp promises an exciting experience to help players improve their game.

Get ready to show off your fancy footwork with cool drills that focus on speed and controlling the ball. Team up with your friends in passing and moving exercises that will make you work together like a well-oiled machine. 

But it's not all serious practice – the camp is packed with mini-games that bring a friendly spirit of competition and teamwork. We believe in learning through playing, creating the perfect environment for young football stars to shine and have a blast.

Inspire Minds Through Sports @ William Ford School

This Summer, Inspire Minds Through Sports will be running healthy eating and nutrition workshops for both children and their families, and encourage those we serve to make new friends and to find out more about the services in our local community. We have some new and exciting activities planned for this Summer, so come along and check it out!

This week 'Esio Trot' by Roald Dahl has been recommended. This is a great book to read. I enjoy reading this book because it is funny and has lots of descriptions.

Year Three Ancient Greek Day

Year Three

As we approach the end of the year, the weeks just get busier and busier (and hotter) and this week has been no exception, culminating in our Ancient Greek Day. It was so lovely to see so many children dressed up and enjoying our exciting activities, such as pot painting, food tasting and taking part in the Olympic Games. The children also had the opportunity to watch an interactive drama based on the Ancient Greeks.

What we have learnt about this week

This week in maths we completed our unit of work looking at mass and capacity and have moved onto money.

In grammar, we learnt about imperative verbs. We also discussed the features of instructional writing and planned and wrote out our own instructions for making a dragon.

In R.E, we have moved on to our final unit called 'People of God' and have learnt the story of Noah through drama.

In history we have learnt and discussed the story of the Trojan War and  decided which elements are based in truth and which are not.

What we will learn about next week

Next week we will continue with money in maths.

In English, we will plan and write our own explanation text for caring for  dragon.

In art, we will look at negative space,

We will be carrying out a range of field work activities  during our trip to Walton on the Naze, to support our geography curriculum.

Year Four 

Year 4 have had another action-packed week, full of fun and learning. We have also completed some of our assessments this week. 

What we have learnt about this week

This week in Year 4, the pupils have been focusing on their enterprise project, where they are writing and illustrating an adventure story, based on the Amazon Rainforest. 

In Literacy, pupils began their adventure story, based on a plane crash landing in the Amazon Rainforest, and the survivors facing a dilemma. 

In maths, we have continued with our fraction unit, however a large portion was dedicated to our pupils completing their mental arithmetic and reasoning assessments. 

In Geography, pupils used computing to research the people of the Amazon, looking at the ways people live in the Amazon Rainforest. 

What we will learn about next week

Next week, we will be looking at making a factfile about the Amazon Rainforest, as well as working on our use of parenthesis in Grammar. 

In Maths, we will complete our unit on fractions, looking at finding fractions of amounts. 

As part of our Enterprise project, linking Geography, Literacy, Reading and Art, the pupils will be making collages based on the layers of the Amazon Rainforest.

Year Five

Despite the hot, sunny weather, Year 5 have continued to work diligently this week and have now completed their end-of-year assessments.

What we have learnt about this week

This week in English we have been planning our newspaper report telling readers about the strange phenomenon of the mysterious Nowhere Emporium. Where did it come from....and why did it disappear?

In mathematics, we have completed our unit looking at negative numbers and applying our learning to problems involving temperature.

During science, we looked at reproduction in plants, insects and amphibians, drawing and painting life cycles.

What we will learn about next week

Next week we will be writing our newspaper reports, making sure we  include all the features we have been learning about.

We begin our new mathematics topic where we will be learning about volume and capacity next week.

We will also be continuing to learn about musical theatre in music and about families in French, including describing family members.

Year Six

The Year 6 children have continued to work hard despite the hot weather.

What we have learnt about this week

This week, the children have continued to practise for their upcoming production.  All roles have been allocated, and the songs have been put onto the school website so that the children can access them at home to practise.  Class 6I visited Dagenham Parish Church on Thursday as part of our commitment to community month.  Half of the class helped to pick up litter from the church grounds while the other half helped to run a toddler group that is held in one of the church halls.  The children enjoyed making a positive impact for their community.  In R.E.  the children learned about Guru Nanak - an important figure within the Sikh religion - whilst in history the children learned about the founder of our school, William Ford.

What we will learn about next week

Next week in science, the children will begin to explore how lifestyle choices have an impact on the health of their bodies.  The first of these sessions will look at the effect of diet and exercise choices.  In R.E. the children will be learning about the different ways Sikhs serve the community as well as exploring the layout of a Skih Gurdwara.  Class 6I will be visiting a Gurdwara in Barking on Friday and classes 6B and 6F will also visit the Gurdwara the following week.  In geography, the children will be planning their enquiry ready for a trip within the local area the following week.
